After our long and varied
journey back from New Zealand, we landed at London Heathrow on July 28 –
exactly a year after setting off on our travels. Claire met us and took us to our house in
High Wycombe, where she lives with partner Raf and son Charlie. It is a small house, with no room now for us,
so Claire had found us a nearby flat to rent for a minimum six months while we
decide on our next move. The flat is
ideal, but was not available until August 2, five days after our return.
Our first week back proved
extremely hectic, as we had to travel to different parts of the country:
To Slough (not far!) for a retirement party
To Wolverhampton to collect our car from the
friends who had used it in our absence
To Faversham (Kent) to visit our son Andrew and
his family, and celebrate granddaughter Isobel’s third birthday
To Great Yarmouth (Norfolk) for the funeral of
Sandie’s Uncle George.
Inbetween trips we moved into
our flat, and did a whole lot of shopping (having discovered that the flat,
though furnished, had no kitchen equipment, bedding, towels etc). We also did a good deal of babysitting and taxi
driving, as Claire too had a number of ‘special events’ that week, including a
(working) trip to Singapore, a day trip to France for a friend’s birthday, and
a hen night for another friend.
All in all, it’s been a frantic week, but it’s
over now, and we are planning to settle down and get on with the many tasks
awaiting our attention!
